Self-custody without the stress

Holding your own keys sounds like a lot of responsibility. Four habits that make self-custody feel as calm as a house key on a hook by the door.

Self-custody means that you, and only you, hold the keys to your bitcoin. It is why nobody can freeze your wallet or lend out your bitcoin. It also means there is no password reset. For many people that sounds frightening. It does not have to be.

A house key is a good comparison. You don’t think about it every day, but you know where it is, you have a spare with someone you trust, and you would never hand it to a stranger. Self-custody works the same way, with four habits.

Write the words down once, properly. When you open your wallet, Remiga shows you twelve recovery words. Write them on paper, in order, with a pen that does not fade. Check them twice. Do not take a photo and do not save them in your notes app. A piece of paper cannot be hacked.

Keep them where you keep important papers. A folder with your passport and your lease is a better place than a kitchen drawer. Some people keep a second copy at a relative’s home. Both copies should be equally safe.

Know the one rule. Nobody needs your recovery words except you, on a new phone, in the Remiga app. Not our support team, not a website and not someone who calls with an urgent problem. If anyone asks, it is a scam, every single time.

Test it once. In Settings, Remiga lets you check your recovery words without restoring anything. Do it once a year, for example when you file your taxes. It takes two minutes and shows you that your paper copy still works.

If you prefer, you can also save an encrypted backup to your own cloud. It only opens with a password you choose, which we never see. Many people use both, the paper copy as the spare key and the cloud backup for convenience.

What we do on our side. Your keys are created on your phone and stored in its secure chip. Every payment needs your face, your fingerprint or your passcode. Our wallet code is public, so anyone can check what it does with your keys.

Self-custody is not about being an expert. It is about a few calm habits, done once and then left alone.
