How to pay in a store with Lightning

Scan the code at the till, check the amount and confirm. What to do if the code does not scan or the payment hangs.

Many cafés, restaurants and shops show a Lightning code at the till. Some display it on a tablet, others print it on a sticker or on the bill.

Open Remiga and tap Scan. Hold your phone about eight inches from the code. Remiga reads it and shows the amount in BTC, the network fee and the name of the shop. Check that the amount matches the order, then tap Pay and confirm.

Most payments settle in under a second. You see a green check mark, and the shop sees the payment on its screen at the same moment.

If the code does not scan, clean your camera, ask the cashier to turn up the screen brightness on the tablet or ask for a fresh code. Codes for a fixed amount expire after a few minutes, so an old one may no longer work.

If the payment spins for more than thirty seconds, do not pay a second time. Open Activity. If the payment shows as Pending, wait a moment. If it shows as Failed, no bitcoin has left your account and you can try again.

No Lightning code at the till? If you have a Remiga card, pay with it instead. It works wherever cards are accepted and converts exactly the bitcoin you need, with no conversion fee.
